It is pouring rain and very cold in Melbourne this morning with maximum temperatures not expected to go past 20 degrees. Thankfully, the weather bureau are predicting that the rain should clear by the time the Formula One cars take to the circuit in just a few hours time for the season opening race, however the condition of the track may be a concern when the lights go out.
If the rain continues to race time, the FIA have said they will delay the start of the event for 15 minutes while teams work on the cars in parc ferme to adapt to a wet race, changing from dry to wet tyres etc. Then, after that, if the rain is still falling, they may just start the race under safety car conditions, not the start fans here have been waiting to see.
Pit lane looks so empty with the cars all locked away, apart from the two Minardi PS03's. Normally at this time the track is alive with the roar of F1 engines, but as warm up has been cancelled this season, the silence is deafening. However, support races, taking place in the wet, will help entertain the crowd as they wait for their heroes to appear this afternoon.

A wet race in prospect?
With a temperature of 16 degrees celcius, 88 percent humidity and the forecast of rain showers, even the weather seems to be adding to the complicated factors affecting the teams' tactical thinking for the Australian Grand Prix.
With only two hours remaining before the start of the race the weather remains overcast with strong gusts of wind blowing pasing showers over the Melbourne circuit.
Under the revised qualifying rules, all the cars that set a time yesterday have spent the night in parc ferme and teams have not been permitted to work on them. According to the new procedures this means that cars will have to start the race on the same wheels and tyres they qualified with, and those are in all cases the grooved slicks designed for normal dry conditions.
The wildcard in the pack is Minardi. The team avoided parc ferme on Saturday by failing to set a qualifying time, giving it more time to work on its cars. But a further advantage is the free tyre choice that the Italian team also enjoys. If it is raining for the start of the race then there could well be 18 cars running on grooved slicks and the two Minardis of Verstappen and Wilson starting from the back on wet tyres and with heavy fuel loads.
It will be fascinating finding out.
