What people were doing at Cannes this year was seeing movies that declared themselves, in dozens of different ways, to be movies. That was their power and allure. And the reason that no one was talking about Netflix very much — beyond the usual industry white noise of chatter about it — is that a number of the key films at Cannes this year owed their impact to the big screen in a way that was so potent and obvious and inevitable, so tied up with their molecular essence, that it literally went without saying.
There was no better example, to me, than “A Hidden Life,” Terrence Malick’s epic, enveloping true-life drama about one man’s journey into the darkness — and the light — of self-sacrifice. Visually, the film is extraordinary. Much of it was shot in the Austrian countryside, where Franz Jägerstätter (August Diehl), the farmer who refuses to enlist in Hitler’s army at the outset of World War II, works the land in a place that looks like the opening sequence of “The Sound of Music” as painted by Bruegel. But that’s because Malick uses his camera as a virtual sensory heightener, transforming this land of mountains and grass into the Garden of Eden as seen through a wide-angle lens.
And the film’s meaning is rooted in that splendor. This, “A Hidden Life” tells us — this beauty, this paradise, this heightened vision of what all of us call home — is the place Franz has been blessed with, and the one he will now leave, through his willingness to die. Every caress of Malick’s camera eye says (or, rather, forces the audience to ask), But how could Franz leave this place? The world that Malick presents is, in a way, too sublime for self-sacrifice. Yet that becomes the measure of Franz’s radicalism. He will leave this beauty behind because, and only because, he glimpses a mirror of that beauty on the other side. His life will end, but his love, like that land, is eternal.
All of this hinges on our grand immersion in the world that “A Hidden Life” shows us. The movie is cinema at its mightiest and holiest. It’s a movie you don’t just watch; it’s a movie you enter, like a cathedral of the senses. Some, in fact, will prove resistant to it (it was not universally beloved), but “A Hidden Life,” as much as any film I’ve seen in the 21st century, is totally contingent upon the big screen. It needs to be bigger than you are, because it’s about bigger things than you — or anyone else. It’s about how the quietest acts of resistance are part of what save civilization.
The fact that Fox Searchlight paid $12 to $14 million to obtain distribution rights, in the U.S. and several international territories, to “A Hidden Life” may seem like a corporate folly, given that Malick’s “The Tree of Life,” which starred Brad Pitt, only grossed $13 million domestic. Yet that film made $61 million worldwide, and “A Hidden Life,” with its European vantage on Third Reich fascism (an unfortunately timely theme right now), has the potential to be a landmark event in foreign territories. That said, the audacity of the Fox Searchlight deal — $12 million for a three-hour Terrence Malick art film — is that it felt like more than just a deal. It felt like an act of faith, a vote for nothing less than the unique transcendent appeal of movies. (We’ll learn, later this year, if it is vindicated.)

Pour sans doute éviter des délits d'initiés, ou pire des soupçons de délits d'initiés, comme le réclame la réglementation en cas d'événement important, la société a en effet demandé la suspension de sa côte hier soir.

FOX SEARCHLIGHT PICTURES ACQUIRES TERRENCE MALICK’S “A HIDDEN LIFE”
Fox Searchlight - May 23, 2019
Fox Searchlight and Malick Reunite Following Palme d'Or-winning “The Tree of Life”
The Film Premiered in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival and is Scheduled for 2019 Release
CANNES, FRANCE May 23, 2019 – Fox Searchlight Pictures Chairmen Nancy Utley and Stephen Gilula announced today that the company has acquired North American and select international territory distribution rights to writer-director Terrence Malick’s “A Hidden Life.” Fresh off its World Premiere in competition at the 72nd Festival de Cannes, the film reunites Malick with Searchlight following the Oscar-nominated Best Picture “The Tree of Life,” which won the festival’s Palme d’Or in 2011. “A Hidden Life” stars August Diehl (“Inglourious Basterds”) as Austrian Franz Jägerstätter, a devoted husband and father who refuses to fight for the Nazis in World War II, even as the possibility of execution threatens to tear him apart from his family. Fox Searchlight will market and distribute the film, which is scheduled for release in 2019.
“A Hidden Life” also stars Valerie Pachner, Maria Simon, Bruno Ganz, Karin Neuhäuser, Tobias Moretti, Matthias Schoenaerts and Ulrich Matthes. The film is an Elizabeth Bay Production in association with Aceway and Studio Babelsberg and is produced by Grant Hill, p.g.a., Dario Bergesio, Josh Jeter and Elisabeth Bentley, with Marcus Loges and Adam Morgan serving as executive producers.
"Terrence Malick has crafted a majestic and deeply affecting story of a man who held onto unwavering faith and devotion during the darkness of war," said Utley and Gilula. "We are elated to reunite with Terrence Malick after the wonderfully rewarding journey of ‘The Tree of Life.’ He has brought his exquisite filmmaking style to this powerful portrait of one man’s spirit in a time of crisis. The performances by the cast, anchored by August Diehl and Valerie Pachner, are tremendous.”
Producer Grant Hill said, “Terry and I are so delighted to be back home with our ‘Tree of Life’ partners, Fox Searchlight. Their commitment and understanding was beyond reproach on ‘Tree’ and we are looking forward to an equally satisfying relationship on ‘A Hidden Life.’ This is a very personal project for Terry and it is great to be back with friends to tell this remarkable true story.”
The deal was brokered by Executive Vice President of Acquisitions & Co-Productions Ray Strache, with Roeg Sutherland and Maren Olsen from CAA and David Garrett from Mister Smith on behalf of the filmmakers.

So it is the true beginning of what filmmaking had evolved to by the 1990s. You don’t go past Leone, you start with Leone.
For my money I think he is the greatest of all Italy’s filmmakers.

The film features a first-rate cast made up of international and Spanish actors including Elena Anaya ("Wonder Woman", "The Summit", "The Skin I Live In", "Sex and Lucia"), Louis Garrel ("Godard Mon Amour", "Love Songs", "The Dreamers" and "A Faithful Man", which he also directed), Gina Gershon ("Killer Joe", "Bound", "The Insider" and "Face Off"), Sergi López ("A Perfect Day", "The Next Skin", "Pan's Labyrinth", "With a Friend Like Harry" ), Wally Shawn (veteran actor who has worked with Woody Allen in films such as "Radio Days", "Shadows and Fog" and "Manhattan") and Cristoph Waltz ("Django Unchained", "Inglorious Bastards", -and Oscar® award-winning roles-, in "Carnage" and "Spectre").
The film tells the story of a married American couple who go to the San Sebastian Film Festival. They get caught up in the magic of the festival, the beauty and charm of Spain and the fantasy of movies. She has an affair with a brilliant French movie director, and he falls in love with a beautiful Spanish woman who lives there. It is a comedy-romance that resolves itself in a funny but romantic way.
"At MEDIAPRO we've been working with Woody Allen for 14 years. His films, like every project the group produces, have a unique personality. This latest movie has all the ingredients to be right up there along with what we've become accustomed to from a director of Woody Allen's talent: an intelligent script and a first-rate international cast. In addition, we're delighted to be able to shoot the movie in a city such as San Sebastian, which has such strong ties to cinema", commented Jaume Roures, founding partner of MEDIAPRO.
THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO, the latest brand from the MEDIAPRO Group and whose objective is unique content creation worldwide, co-produce the Woody Allen movie.
This is the 4th collaboration between the Group and the prestigious director and screenwriter after MEDIAPRO produced "Midnight In Paris", "You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger" and "Vicky Cristina Barcelona", films which won two Oscar® awards, among other prizes and international recognition.
This will also be the 4th collaboration between Woody and renowned award-winning cinematographer Vittorio Storaro.
